Dear Supporter

Last month, a group of 37 cancer experts put their names to a report in the Lancet Oncology journal to condemn what they claim to be a 'culture of excess' which has led doctors to 'overtreat, overdiagnose and overpromise' when it comes to cancer medicines. James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer quickly jumped to the defence of patients on the front page of the Daily Mail. Full story.

Supporting kidney cancer patients for 5 years

To celebrate our birthday the Fund hosted a ball in London last month. Thanks to the support of corporate partners MARIS and an auction by Lord Archer, a good time was had by over 600 supporters and much needed funds were raised to help kidney cancer patients.

Renal nurse training boost

The Fund’s online, university accredited training course for nurses and healthcare professionals with a special interest in the care and treatment of patients with kidney cancer has proved extremely successful, and has highlighted an unmet need that the Fund has been able to fulfill. Over 1,000 learners have enrolled in the first year since it was launched. You can enroll here www.cancernursing.org

Here to help

Our Kidney Cancer Careline launched in March continues to be popular amongst patient and carers who value the support of the staff who are cancer patients. AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline have backed it with a financial contribution.

More Patient Days...

Following the success of Patient Days in 2009/10, the Fund has extended its programme and this year held similar events in Wales, Scotland and Manchester (shown below). Join us at our next Patient Day near Bracknell on Wednesday 30 November. Financial support for these events is provided by GSK, Novartis and Pfizer.

Scottish show

The Fund’s stand at the British Association of Urological Nurses’ (BAUN) annual conference in Edinburgh earlier this month, showcased our online renal cancer course for nurses. It raised awareness of renal cancer among the UK’s nursing profession and the 200 urological nurses at the exhibition.

Walk for A. Cure

Fund supporter Ade Cure died of kidney cancer but wife Jane and bother-in-law Andy led a team of fundraising walkers along the Grand Union Canal in his memory. Ade’s courage in fighting the disease kept the team going over 144 miles and eight days in August.

Arch to Arc

Twice as many people took part in our annual cycle ride to Paris in June this year. It was another successful fundraiser and our new riders enjoyed the challenge of riding over 290 miles in four days. More pics here.

London investment managers Triple Point gathered a ‘mixed ability ‘ team in September for their own A to A, They were successful in raising money and having ‘great fun’. It was a ‘roaring success’ said team leader George Krempels. Maybe your organisation would like the Fund to organise a similar event?
